Chargeable weight

The transport industry uses chargeable weight to calculate prices. The chargeable weight is the heaviest weight of volume weight and actual/real weight.

A parcel on a loading belt

Volume calculation is the method used to convert volume to weight to get the volume weight.

To get the volume weight

  • First you must find the volume of the parcel and then multiply this by its length, width and height.
  • You must have the volume in the correct unit of measurement. Bring uses cubic decimetres (dm3). If the measurements are in cm, divide the result by 1000 to get dm3 (the volume of the item).
  • This volume is then divided by a fixed conversion factor of 5. You are then left with the weight in kg.

For parcels

We estimate 1 kg for each fifth dm3 parcel measured according to the greatest length, width and height. Therefore, the volume must be divided by the fixed conversion factor of 5.

For groupage

We estimate 1 kg for each 3,5 dm3 goods measured according to the greatest length, width and height. Therefore, the volume must be divided by the fixed conversion factor of 3.5.

Parcel calculation example

We have a parcel to be sent from Tønsberg to Molde, which is a distance of 4 zones. The number of zones can be found in the zone overview. The parcel is going to an address within the core area.

  • The parcel measures (LxWxH) 40x20x24 cm and weighs 3 kg
  • Volume = 40 cm x 20 cm x 24 cm = 19,200 cm3
  • You must divide the result by 1000 to get the volume in dm3

Volume weight = Volume 19.2 / Conversion factor 5 = 3.84
The chargeable weight is the heaviest actual/real weight and volume weight and is always rounded up to the nearest whole kg. In this example, the volume weight is highest, so the chargeable weight is 4 kg.

Groupage calculation example

We have a shipment to be sent from Tønsberg to Molde, which is a distance of 8 zones. The number of zones can be found in the place and zone overview.

  • The shipment measures (LxWxH) 120x80x90 cm and weighs 220 kg
  • Volume = 120 cm x 80 cm x 90 cm = 864,000 cm3
  • You must divide the result by 1000 to get the volume in dm3
  • 864,000 / 1000 = 864 dm3

Volume weight = Volume 864 / Conversion factor 3.5 = 246.9

The chargeable weight is the heaviest actual/real weight and volume weight and is always rounded up to the nearest whole kg. In this example, the volume weight is highest, so the chargeable weight is 247 kg. You will find the price in the weight interval 226-250.

247 kg to zone 8, costs NOK 1,847.
